Sizing & runtime
What size portable power station do I need for camping?
Add up each appliance’s watts multiplied by its hours of use, then allow for conversion losses and days without recharging. Also check the combined wattage of appliances used at once. Use our calculator for a personalised estimate.
How many watt-hours do I need for a weekend camping trip?
It depends on your devices and whether you can recharge. For example, 300 Wh of daily appliance use over two days is 600 Wh before conversion losses; allowing 15% losses suggests roughly 710 Wh of nominal capacity.
How long will a 1,000Wh power station run a 100W appliance?
A simple calculation gives ten hours, but real AC runtime is usually shorter because of inverter losses and internal power consumption. At an illustrative 85% usable-energy factor, expect around 8.5 hours.
What is the difference between watts and watt-hours?
Watts measure how fast electricity is used; watt-hours measure total energy. A 100 W device running for three hours uses about 300 Wh.
Can a portable power station run a refrigerator?
Many can, provided the inverter handles the refrigerator’s running watts and compressor startup surge. Runtime depends on compressor duty cycle, room temperature, fridge efficiency and battery capacity.
Can a portable power station run a microwave?
Some larger models can. Check the microwave’s electrical input wattage, not only its cooking-output rating, and verify the station’s continuous inverter and surge ratings.
Can a portable power station boil a kettle?
Only if its AC inverter supports the kettle’s rated power. A 1,500 W kettle typically requires at least 1,500 W continuous output; heating water consumes substantial energy even over short periods.
Can I power a CPAP machine while camping?
Often yes, but check your exact CPAP’s power requirements and whether its humidifier or heated tube is enabled. For medical equipment, confirm manufacturer compatibility and have an appropriate backup plan.
How much battery capacity does a laptop need?
Multiply the laptop’s average charging power by hours used. For example, 60 W over four hours is about 240 Wh before conversion losses. Actual draw varies with workload and battery charging.
How do I calculate portable power station runtime?
Estimate usable battery energy in Wh, then divide by the device’s average watts. For AC appliances, account for inverter losses and idle consumption; cycling appliances require an average-power estimate.
What does a 1,024Wh battery mean?
It is a nominal energy rating of 1,024 watt-hours, equivalent to 1.024 kWh. The amount delivered to AC outlets is normally less because of conversion and operating losses.
Batteries & charging
Is LiFePO4 better than lithium-ion for portable power stations?
LiFePO4 is itself a lithium-ion chemistry. Compared with some nickel-rich lithium-ion chemistries, it often offers longer rated cycle life, though weight, performance and quality depend on the product.
How long do LiFePO4 power station batteries last?
Lifespan depends on temperature, charge patterns and manufacturer design. Compare the stated number of cycles to a specified remaining-capacity percentage, rather than treating a cycle count as a guarantee of years.
Can I charge a power station with solar panels?
Yes, if the station supports solar input and the panels’ voltage, current, connector and polarity are compatible. Solar output varies considerably with weather and panel positioning.
How many solar panels do I need to recharge a 1,000Wh power station?
A rough planning estimate is energy needed divided by effective daily solar generation per panel. For example, a 200 W panel delivering an average 4 equivalent full-sun hours generates about 800 Wh before losses; conditions vary.
Can I leave a portable power station plugged into solar all day?
Many models are designed for solar charging, but follow the manufacturer’s guidance on temperature, weather exposure and connected loads. The station itself may not be waterproof.
Can I use a power station while it is charging?
Some support pass-through charging. Confirm the feature and its input/output limits for your exact model; high sustained loads may increase heat.
Inverters, safety & choosing a model
What is the difference between continuous and surge wattage?
Continuous wattage is sustained output; surge wattage is a brief extra allowance for startup loads. Appliances with motors or compressors may need much higher startup power than running power.
What happens if I overload a portable power station?
Many models trigger overload protection and shut off AC output. Do not rely on protection as a substitute for correctly sizing the station; check the manual for reset instructions.
Do I need a pure sine wave inverter?
Pure sine wave output is generally a good choice for household electronics and motor-driven appliances. Check any particularly sensitive device’s requirements.
Can a portable power station power a home during an outage?
It can run selected compatible appliances within its capacity and output limits. Powering household circuits requires properly designed transfer equipment and qualified installation; never backfeed a wall socket.
Is a portable power station the same as a generator?
A battery power station stores electricity and operates without combustion exhaust at the point of use. A fuel generator produces electricity while running, usually offering refuelling but also noise, emissions and ventilation requirements.
Are portable power stations safe to use indoors?
Battery power stations generally do not produce combustion exhaust during operation, unlike petrol generators. Follow ventilation, temperature and charging instructions, and keep units away from water and heat sources.
What is the best portable power station for van life?
The best fit depends on daily Wh consumption, simultaneous AC load, charging options, weight and space. Start by calculating needs, then compare models that meet both battery and inverter requirements.
Should I buy a larger power station than my calculation suggests?
A modest margin can cover changing usage, ageing and uncertainty, but extra capacity adds cost and weight. Choose a model that comfortably meets realistic energy and peak-power needs.
